Zscaler announced its intent to acquire Symmetry Systems, a specialist in mapping identity and data access for AI security, in a May 21, 2026 press release. Fresh wire coverage syndicated by Zacks Investment Research put the deal back in the news this week, as The Globe and Mail republished. Financial terms have not been disclosed.

Symmetry’s product builds what it calls an access graph. In practice, it watches the access logs already generated across an enterprise’s SaaS, cloud, data, and AI estate and turns them into a live map of which identities, human or machine, actually touch which data. Zscaler plans to make that graph the policy foundation for its Zero Trust Exchange: deciding which agents may communicate with which applications, data, and other agents, and enforcing a response when an agent’s behavior turns risky.

The rationale, per the announcement, is that directory-based governance was built for people in stable groups. Agents break the model: they borrow permissions, spin up short-lived identities, and multiply faster than any group-based scheme can track. Zscaler CEO Jay Chaudhry said the old playbook “cannot scale to millions of AI agents.”

The signal for security architects: segmenting networks is not enough once agents hold standing access to data stores and can move laterally to reach them. Data-layer visibility, mapping identity to actual data access, is the missing control incumbents are now buying.

The move fits a broader consolidation pattern, including CrowdStrike’s XM Cyber deal cited in the same wire coverage. Expect overlapping agentic-security claims across vendors; press for independent validation and watch for integration details once the deal closes.
